Use BioBase Polygons For Targeted Management Insights

Managing a lake or pond rarely requires the same action everywhere. Aquatic vegetation may be concentrated in one bay, fish may be using a specific depth range, or a proposed herbicide treatment may only cover a small portion of the water body. Find out more by using the BioBase Polygon Tool.

The BioBase Polygon Tool helps managers move beyond whole-lake averages by analyzing clearly defined areas of interest. By drawing a custom polygon on a BioBase map, users can generate statistics for a specific treatment zone, habitat area, fish survey location, or other management boundary.

What Is the BioBase Polygon Tool?

The Polygon Tool is available from the Polygons tab in the BioBase trip viewer. It allows users to trace an area of interest directly on the map and generate an analysis for the enclosed area.

This makes it possible to evaluate a selected portion of a water body rather than relying only on statistics for the entire lake or pond.

Plan More Precise Aquatic Herbicide Treatments

One of the most practical applications of the Polygon Tool is aquatic vegetation treatment planning.

Instead of estimating treatment requirements from the total surface area of a water body, managers can draw a polygon around the specific area proposed for treatment. BioBase can then calculate the area, depth characteristics, water volume, and vegetation statistics within that boundary.

These measurements can help teams better define the treatment zone and estimate the amount of water being treated. This is especially valuable when treatment decisions depend on acre-feet rather than surface acreage alone.

The Operator’s Guide provides an example of a polygon drawn around a hypothetical aquatic herbicide treatment area. In that example, the boundary was intentionally kept inside the surveyed boat track because vegetation between the track and shoreline had not been verified.

That distinction is important. A well-placed polygon can help managers focus on areas supported by collected data and avoid unintentionally treating unsurveyed or extrapolated portions of the map as confirmed conditions.

Calculate Water Volume Within a Target Area

Surface acreage does not tell the entire story of a treatment or habitat area. Two zones with the same surface area can contain very different amounts of water because of differences in depth and bottom shape.

With the Polygon Tool, users can calculate water volume for a selected part of the water body. They can also review average, minimum, and maximum depth within the polygon.

This can support several management needs, including:

  • Estimating treatment volume
  • Comparing shallow and deep management zones
  • Evaluating water-storage areas
  • Defining habitat by depth
  • Measuring the volume of water within a specific basin, cove, or shoreline zone

Polygon calculations are based on interpolated raster-grid values from the selected BioBase trip.

Evaluate Fish Within a Defined Area

The Polygon Tool can also help fisheries professionals analyze fish data within a specific portion of a survey.

A polygon may be drawn around a habitat feature, management zone, spawning area, deep-water basin, vegetation bed, or other location of interest. Users can then review available fish-count and fish-depth statistics associated with that area.

This provides a more focused view than looking at fish observations across the entire surveyed water body.

Measure Aquatic Vegetation Cover and Biovolume

Polygons can also be used to evaluate aquatic vegetation within a targeted area.

For example, a manager could draw separate polygons around multiple vegetation beds and compare cover or biovolume between them. A polygon could also represent a treatment area, a monitoring station, a sensitive habitat zone, or an area scheduled for follow-up inspection.

Potential applications include:

  • Defining vegetation-treatment boundaries
  • Comparing vegetation density between zones
  • Measuring vegetation within a cove or shoreline section
  • Monitoring the same area across multiple surveys
  • Evaluating vegetation conditions before and after treatment

Because the polygon focuses the analysis on a defined boundary, users can obtain statistics that are more directly connected to a specific management question.

Reuse Polygons Across Multiple Surveys

A polygon does not have to be used only once.

BioBase allows users to save polygons and apply them to multiple trips. Polygons that intersect a water body can be saved as templates and made available to other members of the same organization. Existing polygons can then be selected, recalculated, and applied to another trip.

This is useful for repeat monitoring because it creates a consistent analysis boundary. Teams can return to the same treatment area, habitat zone, or management unit during future surveys and compare results within the same footprint.

Examples include:

  • Pre-treatment and post-treatment comparisons
  • Annual vegetation monitoring
  • Seasonal fish-distribution assessments
  • Repeat measurements of water volume or depth conditions
  • Long-term tracking of a restoration area

Consistent boundaries make comparisons more meaningful and reduce the uncertainty that can result from analyzing a slightly different area during every survey.

Export Polygons for GIS Workflows

BioBase polygons are not limited to analysis inside the trip viewer.

Users can export selected polygons as GIS shapefiles along with associated area-analysis and statistics data. The shapefiles can be opened in GIS software that supports the .shp format. They may also be converted into compatible trail formats for certain Lowrance or Simrad displays.

Polygon metadata can also be copied from BioBase and pasted into a spreadsheet for additional analysis or reporting.

Data Coverage Still Matters

Polygon statistics are only as reliable as the data available within the selected area.

The Operator’s Guide cautions users to interpret results carefully when only a small portion of a polygon was actually sampled. In those situations, generated statistics may rely heavily on interpolation and may not accurately represent the unsampled portion of the polygon.

Before using polygon results to support a treatment or management decision, consider:

  • How much of the polygon was directly surveyed?
  • Does the survey track adequately cover the area?
  • Is the polygon extending beyond verified vegetation or fish data?
  • Are interpolated areas being mistaken for direct observations?
  • Is additional field verification needed?

Drawing a polygon is easy, but placing it thoughtfully is essential.
